Zooberts! Learn to Read - History and Successes

Zooberts! Learn to Read was created by Priscilla Wilson, whose thirty year teaching career included classroom teaching, special education, and resource teaching. As she continually encountered children who were struggling with learning to read, she decided to create an approach to reading that would demystify what has become a struggle for so many. Zooberts! Learn to Read achieves this goal!

She first used the program with older struggling READERS in grades three to five. Following this she used Zooberts with children in grades one and two. Both of these experiences were very successful, resulting in keen, enthusiastic, and independent READERS.

Everyone loved Zooberts! The children were happy to have a cool program that made learning to read fun and easy. Parents were encouraged and motivated because they understood their role in helping their child learn to read. Educators and other professionals were excited about students’ progress and were extremely supportive of the program.

Who Are The Zooberts?

Hundreds of unique fun-loving characters make up the Zooberts! The main Zooberts characters are Code Man Cool and the five short vowel family mascots.

Code Man Cool is a cool special agent sporting a light bulb on his head because he has so many great ideas about learning to read! He knows that reading is very cool. He has divided information that the READER and the HELPER need to know into ten cool special codes. This not only creates another interesting and unique feature of the program, but it also makes the journey along the Reading Road one of continued intrigue and anticipation.

Each short vowel sound is represented by its own kooky family. Each family is excited about its own sound! Each has a unique mascot, chosen to represent the appropriate short vowel sound! These five mascots are Code Man Cool’s sidekicks and play a key role in Zooberts! Learn to Read Program.

They are:

  • Ally Al - the alligator, a big happy alligator looking like a sheriff in a huge cowboy hat, flashing a big smile and his favourite letter, amber A.
  • Ezzmerelda - the elephant, an energetic elephant wearing a big sweater with her favourite letter, red E. Naturally, her skirt and bows are red matching the rest of her outfit!
  • Igg Rick - the iguana, a cool iguana with dreadlocks. He is wearing shorts, sandals, and his favourite letter, pink I, on a chain around his neck.
  • Octavia - the octopus, a sophisticated octopus sporting her favourite letter, olive O, on her choke collar.
  • Um Ducky Duck - the duck, a zany umbrella duck. She takes her friends sailing, Out to Sea. Her favourite letter, plum U, hangs from her neck.
